Guest: Gareth Porter is an independent investigative journalist and historian specializing in U.S. national security policy. He writes regularly for Inter Press Service but has also published investigative articles on Salon.com, The Nation, Truthout, The American Prospect and The Raw Story. He has received grants from the Investigative Fund of The Nation Institute and from Fund for Investigative Journalism to work on months-long investigations into the 1994 terror bombing in Buenos Aires and the Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia in 1996, both of which resulted in new findings that challenged past mainstream assumptions that Iran was behind both bombings.
Porter is the only journalist who has investigated in depth the intelligence documents of the purported Iranian nuclear weapons research program from 2001-03, which have been at the center of the accusations of Iranian work on nuclear weapons ever since. He has found evidence that those documents are frauds perpetrated on the United States, the IAEA and the international community by Israel. He is the author of four books on the Vietnam War and the political system of Vietnam. Historian Andrew Bacevich called book, Perils of Dominance: Imbalance of Power and the Road to War (2005), "without a doubt, the most important contribution to the history of U.S. national security policy to appear in the past decade." Porter was Saigon bureau chief of Dispatch New Service International in 1971 and later reported on trips to Southeast Asia for The Guardian, Asian Wall Street Journal and Pacific News Service. He was Co-Director of the Indochina Resource Center in Washington, D.C, an anti-war education and lobbying organization, from 1974-76. He has taught Southeast Asian politics and international studies at American University, City College of New York, and the School of Advanced International Studies, John Hopkins University.

Jack Cole knows about the war on drugs from several perspectives. Cole retired as a Detective Lieutenant after a 26-year career with the New Jersey State Police. For twelve of those years he worked as an undercover narcotics officer. His investigations spanned the spectrum of possible cases, from street drug users and mid-level drug dealers in New Jersey to international “billiondollar” drug trafficking organizations. Jack ended his undercover career living nearly two years in Boston and New York City, posing as a fugitive drug dealer wanted for murder, while tracking members of a terrorist organization that robbed banks, planted bombs in corporate headquarters, court-houses, police stations, and airplanes and ultimately murdered a New Jersey State Trooper.

After retiring, Jack dealt with the emotional residue left from his participation in the unjust war on drugs by working to reform current drug policy. He moved to Boston to continue his education. Jack holds a B.A. in Criminal Justice and a Masters degree in Public Policy. Currently writing his dissertation for the Public Policy Ph.D. Program at the University of Massachusetts, his major focus is on the issues of race and gender bias, brutality and corruption in law enforcement.

Mr. Paradiso just finished a tour as the Senior Civilian Representative with Brigade Combat Team Task Force Bastogne, covering four provinces in eastern Afghanistan along the Pakistan border. In that role, Mr. Paradiso shaped governance, development and counterinsurgency strategy in coordination with the brigade commander, and provided management and oversight for more than forty personnel under Chief of Mission authority, from three agencies, at ten combat outposts and forward operating bases.

A career Foreign Service Officer, Mr. Paradiso previously served as Deputy Political-Economic Counselor at U.S. Embassy Addis Ababa, 2007-2009, one of the largest reporting sections in Africa . Mr. Paradiso was a political officer in Beijing from 2005-2007, covering China-Africa relations, and in Monrovia from 2003-2005, covering the last days of Charles Taylor’s regime and the climax of Liberia ’s civil war. At the height of the Liberian crisis, he held variously the political, economic, consular, public affairs and political-military portfolios, and supported the Ambassador’s successful negotiations to lift the siege of Monrovia and end the conflict. Mr. Paradiso was also detailed to Djibouti for several months in 2007-2008 as Deputy Foreign Policy Advisor to Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa, the U.S. counterterrorism base in East Africa .

Mr. Paradiso started his career with the State Department as an intern political officer in Dar Es Salaam , Tanzania , in 1998, where he survived the devastating bombing of U.S. Embassy Dar Es Salaam that, together with the near simultaneous attack on U.S. Embassy Nairobi, proved a harbinger of the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Mr. Paradiso began his long involvement with African affairs as a Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya in the mid-nineties and is the recipient of a number of State Department Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards for his work in both China and Africa .

Mr. Paradiso is a Massachusetts attorney and, prior to joining the State Department, practiced financial services law with Goodwin Procter LLP in Boston . He received his J.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles and his B.A. in Political Science from Yale University , after preparing at The Horace Mann School in New York .

Immediately after college, Mr. Paradiso worked with California Conservation Corps, a youth development program based on the Depression-era federal Civilian Conservation Corps. A native New Yorker, he is married to the former Darragh Jones of Portland, Oregon, who is also a Foreign Service Officer and is currently the Director for East Asia Public Affairs.

This is a special feature from my old radio show, "American AM". Originally broadcast in September, 2006, It tells a story of our lost history, a home-grown fascist plot to launch a coup against FDR. Historian Harley Schlanger tells the story that involves J.P. Morgan, General Smedley Butler, and other figures of the era. Front page news at the time, hearings were held in Washington, D.C. confirming the plot.
